Spring getaways in the Northwest can be dampened by soggy weather and lengthened by busy ferry lines. Picked-over hotel breakfast buffets or expensive room service add cost to a short trip where your wallet will have to return home to rejuvenate.
What if the weather didn’t matter, there were no ferries to catch, and a hot, gourmet breakfast made just for you were about an hour’s drive from Everett?
At the Blue Moon Beach House on Camano Island, owners Sam and Andy Egloff have created a cozy retreat for up to eight people where visitors can relax in soothing peace and quiet while the sun shines on the water outside or the rain falls on the pebble beach.
The Egloffs owned a coffee shop and bakery in Spokane before they moved to Western Washington. They bought Blue Moon Beach House in 2005 and wanted to re-create the warm and inviting feel they had in their previous business.
This remote location at Tyee Beach on the southeast end of Camano Island is tucked away among cabins and summer properties. The three-room bed and breakfast is open year-round and offers privacy, beautiful views and satisfying food.
Guests can kick off their work week shoes and sink into one of the feather beds in the Moonlight Suite, the Blue Moon Room or the Sea Star Room.
The Moonlight Suite is a two-story suite with a large private deck and private bathroom. Downstairs, visitors can relax on comfortable couches in front of a cozy gas fireplace, while bird-watching from the picture window. Upstairs in the loft, an inviting bed beckons the weary.
This suite has a stone floor and wooden-beamed ceiling, as well as a kitchenette.
After a long beach walk, those staying in the Moonlight Suite can soak in the wood-fired hot tub on the deck.
For those who need to check in with the outside world, wireless Internet is available.
The Blue Moon Room is perfect for relaxing while listening to the sound of the water lapping against the pilings. Additional loft space is perfect for reading in peace or sipping tea while letting time slip by quietly.
There is a king-sized feather bed in the Sea Star Room, a private deck and a large soaking tub. The gas fireplace makes snuggling in easy.
Each of the three rooms has cable television and DVD players. Soaking tubs, wavy mirrors and fish and boat features make the Blue Moon Beach House as soothing as the water looks outside.
Babymooners are frequent guests at Blue Moon Beach House. These couples are nearing the end of their pregnancy and come to grasp those last few days when they can relax on their own schedule before becoming parents.
When the weather is good, visitors can rent kayaks, hike and beach walk. In-room massages can be arranged for any guests. Take the car and explore Camano Island’s many treasures, including the state park on the west side and Camaloch Golf Course on the north end.
Blue Moon Beach House is only 2 miles from the tip of Camano Island. Take binoculars to peek over to Kayak Point from the bed and breakfast. Stanwood sits to the left and Everett to the right across the water.
Blue Moon Beach House is a soft cushion to land on when attending a nearby wedding or family reunion. Approximately 70 percent of the clientele comes from Seattle and Everett, with the rest arriving from Canada and overseas.
Whoever comes to Blue Moon Beach House will stay in a waterfront room where guests can enjoy breakfast in bed, or in the small dining area with other visitors.
Either way, the baked frittata with sun-dried tomatoes and basil is a treat, along with creme brulee French toast and locally roasted coffee.
And don’t worry about not making it downstairs at an appointed time. Breakfast, as everything else here, is on its own relaxed clock.
