Avalanche of events: March 1 marks the 100th anniversary of the Wellington railroad disaster, when an avalanche roared across the railroad tracks at Wellington near Stevens Pass and wiped out two Great Northern trains, killing 96 people.
To commemorate this anniversary author Martin Burwash is making several presentations of his historical novel, “Vis Major: Railroad Men, an ‘Act of God’ — White Death at Wellington” ($29.95).
Burwash will discuss his book and sign copies at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Monroe Library, 1070 Village Way, 360-794-7851; and at 7 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Lynnwood Library, 9200 44th Ave. W., 425- 778-2148.
Burwash is joined by other historians and author of “The White Cascade” ($16), Gary Krist, at 1 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Skykomish school, 105 Sixth St. N.
The event is put on by the Skykomish Historical Society and will include discussions, displays and other railroad related books.

Bank job: Thomas Mullen introduces his second novel, “The Many Deaths of the Firefly Brothers” ($26), two bank robbers who become Depression-era Robin Hoods.
