The results are in for Round 1 of our countdown to Thanksgiving, the Food Fight bracket. Most of the top seeds cruised easily into the next bracket. Turkey made lunch meat out of elk, and it was a slick ride for gravy, putting hush puppies back in the doghouse.
And hey, food fans, how about that roast pork and roasted chicken match-up? They were neck and neck when, in a sudden upset, pork took a four-point shot seconds before the buzzer.
In the fruits and veggies region, both cranberries (fresh and canned) advanced. Look for a messy match if those two big contenders advance.
Now for the lighter side of the news: desserts. No surprises here. Chocolate chip cookies didn’t have a chance against the hefty gingerbread man. He can scrape that frosting frown off his face and get ready to meet his baker. He’s up against another favorite … pecan pie.
Of course, Round 3, the Sweet 16, will be all about desserts, the dishes that disappear despite all the diners claims that they’re “just too full.”
It’s not too late to get in on the action. Check out the Round 1 results and cast your votes for Round 2 at www.heraldnet.com/foodfight. Polls close for Round 2 Monday afternoon.
