KTCS Television presents its 20th live viewer cooking special, “KCTS Cooks: ‘S’ Is for Salads,” at 11 a.m. Nov. 6.

The popular series features live viewer cooking specials submitted by KCTS viewers. This series features 13 viewers demonstrating their favorite recipes for dishes including “Potatoes Cougar” to coconut angel pie.

The latest in the “KCTS Cooks: Favorite Recipes” series is hosted by KCTS’ George Ray and chef Brian Poor, a local culinary expert and restaurant consultant. Paula Nemzek, who has served as co-producer of the successful cooking specials since their inception in 1996, will appear in live pledge breaks, sharing background information on the featured recipes and viewer, and offering sneak peeks at recipes that will be included in the companion cookbook.

The “KCTS Cooks: Favorite Recipes” cookbook will include all of the recipes featured in the special, plus more than 250 additional recipes contributed by viewers in Washington state and Canada. The cookbook will be offered as a pledge premium during broadcasts of the program.

In addition to live viewer cooking demonstrations, the program will feature recipe demonstrations pre-taped at three area eateries.

The show will be aired again at 3 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Five weeks to change

With the nation’s increasing problem with obesity, making healthful meals has become more challenging for busy moms.

A new cookbook, “The Moms’ Guide to Meal Makeovers: Improving the Way Your Family Eats, One Meal at a Time,” offers small, easy steps to positive change in the way children eat and drink.

Liz Weiss and Janice Newell Bissex co-authored the book that offers simple steps to change eating habits in five weeks.

Weiss is an award-winning broadcast journalist and registered dietitian specializing in health, nutrition and culinary communications. Bissex is a speaker and nutrition consultant.

These and more steps toward positive change in the way children eat and drink are offered in the book.

* Week one – Add one extra serving of fruit each day.

* Week two – Add one extra vegetable serving each day.

* Week three – Add one healthy beverage a day.

* Week four – Include one healthy snack each day.

* Week five – Serve one extra high-fiber grain food each day.

“The Moms’ Guide to Meal Makeovers” is available at most bookstores or visit www.mealmakeovermoms.com.
