Translated from the Italian, the title is simple: “choral music.”
Sno-King Community Chorale’s “Musica da Coro” concert on March 22 features the “Gloria” movement from “Massa dello Matrimonio” by chorale director Frank DeMiero as well as Charles-Francois Gounod’s “St. Cecilia Mass,” which includes the accompaniment of the Cascade Youth Symphony under the baton of Gerry Jon Marsh.
The chorale and orchestra draw members from throughout Snohomish County as well as north King County.
The concert opens with Otto Nicolai’s overture to the opera “The Merry Wives of Windsor,” performed by the youth orchestra.
Four movements of Gounod’s mass will be presented. Gounod, who at one time considered the priesthood, had success with his secular music during his 19th-century career, DeMiero said, but Gounod’s music for the church was where his heart was. Soloists are Melanie Tuttle Hingson, Thomas Hingson and Matthew Richardson.
The chorale also offers American gospel selections along with “The Lord Bless You and Keep You” and “For the Beauty of the Earth” by contemporary composer John Rutter.
“Rutter has gained great respect in the music world from performers and audiences,” DeMiero said. The hymns are among Rutter’s many compositions for choral groups, orchestra, piano and for television.
DeMiero’s mass was written for the wedding of his son and daughter-in-law. He began composing the work while the DeMiero family toured the coastal town of Sorrento, Italy, which he said “continues to retain the ‘old country’ feel and beauty.”
DeMiero’s “Gloria,” with its changing meter, soprano and bass solos and rhythmic energy, is the finale of the Musica da Coro concert.
