We embrace summertime in the Pacific Northwest like a long-lost love. After months of marching around in Gore-Tex and waterproof moccasins, we’re ready to spend gloriously long days out in the sun.

And this presents our next problem: exposure to the sun.

Here in the fourth edition of

The Herald’s Good Health magazine, we’ll help you navigate the outdoors without painful, if not permanent, injury.

You’ll find good information on skin cancer and its treatment, including how to recognize potentially threatening moles and when to see a doctor.

We talk about the need for sunscreen and remind you that you need one-fourth of a cup to safely cover your exposed epidermis.

Speaking of your exposed epidermis, do you know how to extract a splinter? We’ll tell you.

You’ll read about what to do with your kids’ scrapes, itches and bites. Is Calamine safe? (Yes.)

Properly fitted life jackets are a necessity on the water. We’ll show you the best kind for various activities so you can swim and sail worry-free.

Our stories will help you fit out your backpack for any day hike, grill marshmallows without burning down the house and make a good impression at the dog park.

Hey, maybe that’s why they call them the dog days of summer.

Summer foods: Four stars of the season and simple ways to enjoy them.
