School Winners

Principal honored by Air Force Assn.

Mountlake Terrace High School assistant principal Peter Schurke was named the third place finalist in the Air Force Association’s National Aerospace Teacher of the Year program.

The third-place finalist receives $1,000.

The program recognizes classroom teachers at the national level for their accomplishments and achievements in building enthusiasm among K-12 students about science, technology, engineering and math, and preparing them to use these skills.

Everett students design safety posters

Two Lowell Elementary School students earned recognition in October for fire safety posters they created. Isabella Hsu, a second-grader, and Jessica Jefferson, a fourth-grader, received certificates signed by Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson.

They also earned an antique, refurbished fire helmet and a ride to school in a fire truck.

The poster selection committee chose the winning posters from about 150 submissions. The Everett Firefighters Association gave each classroom with 100 percent participation in the poster design contest an ice cream social.

Everett firefighters visited nine facilities including Lowell Elementary throughout the month of October in recognition of Fire Prevention Month.

The visits aimed to teach children and adults about proper smoke alarm maintenance, fire extinguisher training and creating a home fire escape plan.

Edmonds School Board honors student

The Edmonds School Board on Oct. 30 honored Raymond Free, a student at Meadowdale Elementary School.

The sixth-grader saw a younger boy walking alone several blocks from their school, looking out of place and possibly lost, according to interim principal Craig Madsen.

Raymond told the younger boy, a second-grader, that he would walk him back to school. The pair started on their way when the younger boy’s mother drove up. The younger boy had been unaccounted for about 20 minutes, after missing his meeting point with his mom at the end of the school day. School staff and several parents had been searching for the lost boy.

Madsen praised Raymond’s clear thinking and caring nature. The administrator nominated him for recognition by the school board.

Arlington Students of the Month named

The Rotary Club of Arlington recently announced and recognized its outstanding students for the month of October.

Students honored on Oct. 18 were awarded a certificate and a voucher for a $50 donation to a nonprofit group at their school or a nonprofit organization in their community.

Rotarian and Arlington superintendent of Schools Kris McDuffy presented certificates to Marcus Salmon of Arlington High School and Ryan Brower of Lakewood Middle School.

Marcus is a junior at Arlington High School. He has been involved in Air Force Junior ROTC and is a member of the football and track teams. He was nominated for volunteering to help his teachers and showing patience and thoughtfulness. Marcus chose to give his $50 donation to the Sarvey Wildlife Care Center.

Ryan is an eighth-grader at Lakewood Middle School. He earned the highest score in his cohort in reading last spring, and a perfect score in mathematics.

Ryan was nominated for showing positive leadership, enthusiasm for learning, and desire to constantly improve his skills. He chose to give his $50 donation to the N.O.A.H. Center (Northwest Organization for Animal Help) in Stanwood.
