Snohomish graduate earns PLU degree
Mercedes Begley, a 2008 graduate of Snohomish High School, has earned a bachelor of arts degree in Chinese studies with minors in anthropology and global studies from Pacific Lutheran University.
She is the daughter of James and Roberta Begley of Lake Stevens.
FCCLA students win at state conference
Monroe High School senior Hannah McCombs took first place in Fashion Construction at the Family, Career and Community Leaders Club of America state conference in Wenatchee, qualifying her to represent Washington at the FCCLA National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla. in July.
Hannah first competed at the FCCLA regional conference in February where she also won gold recognition. Her entry was a prom dress she made from two patterns. She also submitted a photo story board of her project along with a time log, cost estimate, fabric profile and an in-person presentation.
Every student from Monroe High who competed at the state FCCLA conference won a medal. Other winners are: Andie Walton and Ariel Maki, gold medal in Chapter Service Display: Quilting for Charity; Abbie Reneau, silver medal in National Programs in Action: School Bullying; Katryna Castor and Monica Ourada, bronze medal in Culinary Arts.
FCCLA is an organization for students involved in family and consumer science education. Teacher Christine Satogami serves as advisor at Monroe High. At the conference, students had the opportunity to attend workshops on topics such as personality types, health, and other subjects related to FCCLA national programs.
Lake Stevens names students of month
Students in the Lake Stevens School District were recognized on May 9 as April’s Students of the Month.
These students include:
Lake Stevens High School: 10th grade, Sean Davidson and Emily Schollenberger; 11th grade, Talia Bailey and Colby Henderson; and 12th grade, Terry Brady and Kelsey Reimers.
Cavelero Mid High School: eighth grade, Naomi Bodach and Christofer Forbes; ninth grade, Nick Peda and Laeticia Tsa.
Lake Stevens Middle School: sixth grade, Peter Kravchuk and Scout Slechta; seventh grade, Ryan Sander and Abbigayle Storwick.
North Lake Middle Schooll: sixth grade, Anna Johanson and Cole Thompson, seventh grade: Phoebe Demeerleer and Austen Pyle.
Everett resident earns Smith degree
Sonja Harrower, a 2007 graduate of Everett High School, received a bachelor’s degree from Smith College on May 20.
Harrower majored in biological sciences. Her undergraduate activities at the college in Northampton, Mass., included playing on the ice hockey team and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. This summer she plans to continue working with the U.S. Forest Service in Utah.
Harrower is the daughter of Kathy and Rob Harrower of Everett.
Archbishop Murphy student earns Eastern scholarship
Kendell Erickson of Snohomish was awarded an Academic Honors Scholarship of $3,500 for the 2012-2013 academic year at Eastern Washington University.
The award is given to an incoming freshman with a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.7 or higher, or an SAT score of at least 1100.
Kendell plans to graduate from Archbishop Thomas J. Murphy High School this spring, where she is a member of the varsity softball team and serves as a manager for the football and wrestling teams. She also has been involved in Snohomish County 4-H for seven years.
She intends to pursue a degree in athletic training as a freshman at Eastern this fall.
Kendell is the daughter of Marcus and Janine Erickson of Snohomish.
Mountlake Terrace resident a top scholar
The National Society of High School Scholars recently announced that Esteban Parreno of Mountlake Terrace was selected for membership.
The society recognizes top scholars and invites only those students who have achieved academic excellence.
Esteban attends Bishop Blanchet High School in Seattle.
