Local Model U.N. class wins at state

Students from the Sky Valley Education Center’s Model United Nations class earned eight awards at the 12th annual Washington State Model United Nations held recently at Seattle University.

Washington State Model United Nations simulates the type of debate, discussion and analysis on international issues found in the real world. Delegates engage in negotiation and diplomacy to reach consensus on viable solutions to world problems.

To prepare for a conference, students research the country or nongovernmental organization they are assigned to represent and become familiar with that entity’s position on the different issues.

The award winners are:

CeAnna Heit, Best Research, France on the Economic and Social Council.

Gregory Hopper, Best Diplomat, France on the World Health Organization.

Jamie Kisela, Best Research, France on the World Bank.

Brittney Landstrom, Best Research, Timor-Leste on the Disarmament and International Security Committee.

Jessee Mellinger, Best Research and Best Statesman, NGO Working Group on Women, Peace and Security in the Nongovernmental Organization Committee.

Ashley Nixon, Honorable Mention, France on the World Intellectual Property Organization.

Marlena Wied, Best Diplomat, France on the Disarmament and International Security Committee.

EdCC accounting student honored

Edmonds Community College student Siyu Lu, 22, of Lynnwood is one of seven nationwide recipients of a $1,000 scholarship from the Teachers of Accounting at Two-Year Colleges.

The scholarships are awarded based on grade point average, recommendations and the applicant’s commitment to a career in accounting. Lu is the first scholarship recipient from the state.

In March, Lu also earned the All-Washington Academic Team honor, which recognizes the state’s top community and technical college students for scholarship, leadership and community service.

Lu plans to study accounting and finance at the University of Washington.

She would one day like to work as a financial analyst with a taxation specialty. Her dream is to establish a nonprofit that promotes family financial literacy and educate the public about personal finance management.
