South Whidbey student earns spot in poetry contest

Sommer Harris of South Whidbey High School earned one of the two top spots in Northwest Educational Service District 189’s Poetry Out Loud Regional Final on Feb. 8 in Burlington.

Sommer now goes to the state finals on March 10 in Tacoma. The winner there goes to the national finals in Washington D.C.

Other students who participated in the regional event included Hannah Gould from Highland Christian School, Caroline Haywood from Darrington High School and, for her second year in a row, Sam Tichota from Stanwood High School.

Student accepted by aerospace program

Granite Falls High School junior Pooja Sethi has been accepted into the Washington Aerospace Scholars 2011-12 program. The program is a free, competitive, science, technology, engineering and mathematics education program for high school juniors from across Washington State. Pooja was selected from 297 students from 110 different public, private and home school organizations who applied to participate aerospace scholars program.

Pooja has a 4.0 grade point average and a strong interest in math and science. She has completed classes in chemistry, calculus, advanced placement statistics and physics, and is currently taking calculus II and macro-economics through the Running Start program at Everett Community College. She was a two-year member of the Granite Falls High School Eco-car ShopGirls team, a team that designed and built a fuel efficient car that competed in the Shell Eco-marathon Americas national competition in Texas.

She is also a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, Knowledge Bowl, and cross country teams. Last year, Sethi placed fourth in the national FBLA competition in the Accounting I category.

Pooja will spend the next five months competing academically for one of the 160 slots in a summer residency session held at the Museum of Flight in June and July. To qualify for the summer residency, students must satisfactorily complete 10 online lessons consisting of research essays, space-related math problems, and detailed graphics that illustrate their ideas.

Gold Bar students win essay contest

The Gold Bar Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary 9417 sponsors an essay contest each year for students at Gold Bar Elementary School.

The theme this year was “What is an American?”

First place winners at the local level were: Morgan McCartney, fifth grade; Justine Kalapis-Plainfeather, fourth grade; and Tremaine Powell, third grade. An honorable mention was also awarded to fourth-grader Victoria McGrew.

Morgan and Tremaine went on to take first place in their respective grade levels at the District Level. Justine was awarded second place for the fourth grade.

The essays of the district winners were sent on to the state level where Tremaine was awarded second place for the third grade.

Winning students were awarded certificates and monetary gifts at each level. District winners were also awarded trophies.

Student named to honors list at college

Jessica Lozeau was recently placed on the president honors list at Cottey College for scholastic performance during the fall 2011 semester.

She is the daughter of Edward Lozeau of Marysville and Monica Wehrman of Kirkland. Her grandparents are Marvin and Rosemary Wehrman of Everett. Lozeau is sponsored by Chapter Al, Everett, a philanthropic educational organization.

Cottey College is in Nevada, Mo. A student must have a grade point between 3.75 and 4.0 with a minimum of 12 credit hours to be eligible to be named to the president honors list.
