Lake Stevens honors district teachers
The December recipients of the Lake Stevens Apple Award are: Elizabeth Granillo, a photography teacher at Lake Stevens High School; Brenda LaBranche, a paraeducator at Mount Pilchuck Elementary; Jason Pearson, a history teacher and athletic director at Cavelero Mid High School; and Angela Zanol, a first-grade teacher at Skyline Elementary.
Awards are scheduled to be presented at 7:30 p.m. Jan 11 at the Lake Stevens School Board meeting in the Educational Service Center.
Granite teacher earns national certification
A math teacher at Granite Falls High School recently became a National Board Certified Teacher through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
Clint Johnson joins nine other teachers in the Granite Falls School District that have earned National Board Certification.
The certification is recognized nationwide as a model for identifying accomplished teaching practice and is supported by teachers and administrators.
Maltby Elementary food drive a success
Maltby Elementary School’s Student Council sponsored their annual food drive for the Maltby Food Bank this month.
Donations totaling more than 3,500 items came from Maltby Elementary families and the community.
Maltby Elementary is in the Monroe School District.
Snohomish Rotarians honor AIM Students
Members of the Snohomish Rotary Club on Dec. 1 recognized AIM High School Students of the Fourth Quarter.
The awards were presented to students August Davis and Krystal Johnson during the club’s regular breakfast meeting.
Stanwood resident in tribute concert
Student Ellen Wise performed Nov. 19 in the Belhaven University Vocal Arts Concert.
Wise, a sophomore from Stanwood, is pursuing a bachelor of arts degree in music at Belhaven University in Jackson, Miss.
The concert, “Art of the Spiritual: Moses Hogan Remembered,” celebrated the life and work of arranger, conductor and concert pianist Moses Hogan.
Hogan died in 2003 of a brain tumor. He was 45.
The performance was at the Belhaven University Center for the Arts, Concert Hall. A second performance on Nov. 20 was held at Pear Orchard Presbyterian Church Sanctuary in Ridgeland, Miss.
Rotary club honors Student of the Month
The Rotary Club of South Everett-Mukilteo recently honored Taylor Cole as their November Student of the Month at Kamiak High School.
Taylor is the daughter of Alayna Railton and Brian Cole. A senior at Kamiak, Taylor is the community service vice president of DECA, a Link Leader, a member of the leadership class, and a member of the National Honor Society. She also volunteers as a Young Life Student Leader, encouraging students in lower grades to practice a positive life style.
After graduation, Taylor plans to attend a four-year university to study business management and entrepreneurship. She then intends to continue her education and obtain a baking and pastry degree from the Culinary Institute of America in Sonoma, Calif. One day, she’d like to own a bakery and kitchen shop.
The award was presented to her by club president Steve Shea at the Nov. 18 meeting at the Everett Golf and Country Club.
Arlington Rotary honors students
The Rotary Club of Arlington on Nov. 17 recognized its outstanding students for the month.
Rotarian and Arlington Schools Superintendent Kris McDuffy, presented certificates to Grace Ziegler and Lilly Whitehead.
Grace is a student leader at Haller Middle School in Arlington. Grace, who is in the eighth grade, is a member of the Haller Associated Student Body Executive Council and rotates officer duties. In addition to taking advanced courses in math and English Language Arts, she plays in the band, and is a member of the Haller Volunteer Club and Inspiration Girl’s club.
Lilly is an eighth-grader at Lakewood Middle School. She consistently earns a 4.0 grade point average while participating in the districts’ Highly Capable program. Lilly leads the trumpet section in the Lakewood Middle School Band and performs solos at plays and concerts. She also participates in her school’s cross-country and track team.
Grace and Lilly were also awarded a voucher for a $50 donation to a nonprofit group at their school or a nonprofit organization in their community.
Meadowdale grad wins scholarship
Central Washington University music student Taryn Zickefoose recently received the $1,000 Young Musician Scholarship from Ellensburg’s Jazz in the Valley Music Festival.
The festival’s board established the scholarship for the benefit of graduating high school and transfer students who wish to pursue music studies at the university in Ellensburg.
Zickefoose is a graduate of Meadowdale High School in Lynnwood. She is a transfer student to Central’s Jazz Studies program and has participated in the top jazz choir and band at Point Loma University in San Diego, Calif., and at Mount Hood Community College in Portland, Ore. As a member of the university’s jazz choirs, she has traveled to the Monterey Jazz Festival and the Jazz Education Network Conference in New Orleans, La.
Zickefoose is pursuing a double major in percussion performance and special education.
