Archbishop Murphy hosts shoe drive
The Interact Club at Archbishop Murphy High School collected more than 2,000 pairs of shoes for people in need from May 4 to June 5.
The club is sponsored by the Mill Creek Rotary, a service-based student club with 20 members.
The shoe drive was organized by juniors Hannah Jordan and Marie Adams. Club members organized class contests to see which class could contribute the most pairs of shoes. The sophomore class donated more than 1,000 pairs to win.
The Youth Migrant Project received the donated shoes. The Youth Migrant Project is a program for the families of local migrant farm workers, based at St. Charles Catholic Church in Burlington.
County residents honored at Emory
David Robinson of Snohomish received a doctorate of medicine degree from the School of Medicine of Emory University in Atlanta on May 11.
Edmonds resident William Guo made the dean’s list at Emory College for the 2009 spring semester. Guo is the son of Zhanyang Guo and Hong Xu of Edmonds.
To be included on the dean’s list, students must be in the top 20 percent of the student body or have about a 3.86 grade point average or higher.
Emory College is the undergraduate, liberal arts college of Emory University.
Monroe student wins award
Kevin Nowadnick of Monroe was one of 20 students who graduated from Eastern Washington University this spring to be awarded the Frances B. Huston Award, the most prestigious award given by Eastern to a student.
The Frances B. Huston Award was established to honor former Eastern teacher Frances B. Huston’s commitment to education and student excellence. It is given to graduating seniors for academic excellence and outstanding leadership. Students must be nominated for this award by a faculty member and selected by the dean of his or her college.
The recipients were honored at a special reception June 12, where they each received a medallion and certificate. They also received special recognition at commencement June 13.
Nowadnick graduated summa cum laude with a degree in urban and regional planning. At EWU, he was a member of Associated Student Planners.
Nowadnick is a 2005 graduate of Monroe High School, where he played varsity soccer. His parents, Kurt and Deanna Nowadnick, live in Monroe.
Everett man earns bachelor’s degree
Everett resident Chad Schroeder received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago during the May commencement.
Bellevue College gives awards
Everett resident Ron Holland was one of six Bellevue College faculty and staff members honored with a Margin of Excellence Award from the Bellevue College Foundation.
Holland was recognized for his work as a program specialist in Bellevue College’s TRiO program, which provides academic and personal support to first-generation students and those challenged by limited income or disabilities.
