Fourth-graders raise, release salmon

The fourth-grade class at St. Thomas More School in Lynnwood recently raised salmon and released them in their smolt stage into a creek at Meadowdale Beach Park in Edmonds. The fourth-graders raised the salmon from eggs. This is the 10th year that St. Thomas More fourth-grade students have raised and released salmon.

Edmonds woman graduates from Gonzaga

Meghan Bookey of Edmonds, recently graduated from Gonzaga University at Veteran’s Arena in Spokane with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Bookey was also named to the president’s list for achieving a 3.7 or better grade-point average.

Mukilteo student receives U.S. Bank award

U.S. Bank recently named Mahogany Dodd of Mukilteo as one of 30 high school seniors to receive a $1,000 U.S. Bank 2007-08 Internet scholarship. Dodd was selected from students throughout the country who applied for the 12th annual scholarship sponsored by the U.S. Bank student banking division.

Dodd, a graduate of Kamiak High School, participated in a variety of activities during her school years, including volleyball, golf, teen court and the Honor Society. She was also a Link Leader.

Lynnwood sixth-grader a DARE student

Lynnwood Police Officer Alan Correa recently honored College Place Elementary sixth-grader Tanner Berhndahl as being the Lynnwood Police Department’s June 2008 “DARE — Decision Maker of the Month.”

Berhndahl was selected from more than 300 DARE students in Lynnwood schools to be honored for his good choices.

Correa hopes the DARE program teaches kids to respect themselves and others.

Lynnwood students receive Terlicker award

The city of Lynnwood Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department recently awarded two students, Daphne Wei and Kyle Coleman, the annual Randy Terlicker Memorial Aquatics and Life Safety Scholarship. Daphne and Kyle each received certificates and $500.

Daphne Wei of Bothell is an active volunteer and has contributed to many city of Lynnwood events. She plans to gain lifeguard and water safety instructor certifications.

Kyle Coleman of Lake Stevens has been a lifeguard and swim instructor. He plans to obtain a fire science associate of technical arts degree at Everett Community College.

The annual scholarship was established by the Lynnwood City Council in 1995 to commemorate the life of Randy Terlicker, who was the Lynnwood aquatics supervisor from 1988 to 1990. In 1990, Terlicker became a Seattle firefighter. He lost his life in the line of duty in January 1995.

Marysville student named to dean’s list

Corry Haines of Marysville recently was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2008 quarter at Rochester Institute of Technology. Haines is studying computer science and is a third-year student in RIT’s B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences.

Haines is the daughter of David and Yvonne Haines of Marysville. She is a 2005 graduate of Archbishop Murphy High School.

Rochester Institute of Technology offers computing, imaging, technology, engineering, fine, and applied arts education for the deaf.

Children’s association awards 10 scholarships

The Providence General Children’s Association recently awarded 10 scholarships worth $1,500 each to high school seniors from across the county.

Fundraising efforts from the association’s guilds and sales from two hospital gift shops netted $185,000, which was targeted to support the scholarships and community and hospital efforts focusing on children.

The scholarship recipients listed by their schools were:

Cascade High School, Victoria Nguyen. Lakewood High School, Melissa Osburn and Sarah Dunn. Lake Stevens High School, Tessa Meyer and Irina Andreyanova. Snohomish High School, Ann Marie Cruikshank. Stanwood High School, Katrina Verzosa. Marysville-Pilchuck High School, Prabhjyot Gill. Everett High School, Amanpreet Bhathal. Granite Falls High School, Mercades Diaz. And Western Washington University, Kaitlin Duffy.

Snohomish student named to dean’s list

Kari Zylstra, daughter of Arthur and Ronda Zylstra of Snohomish, recently was named to the Spring 2008 Dean’s list at Evangel University.

Full-time students who have earned a grade point average of 3.6 or higher on a 4.0 scale are eligible for the honor.

During the spring semester, Zylstra was a senior with a major in music.

Evangel University is a private, coeducational university.

Mill Creek woman earns teaching certificate

Leslie Schmunk of Mill Creek recently earned a Musikgarten teaching certification to teach kids ages 4 to 7 music.

Schmunk plans to add Musikgarten classes to her existing infant, toddler and preschool programs at her studio at Mountain View Community Church in Snohomish.

Everett students named to dean’s lists

Rebecca Glosser of Everett, a sophomore majoring in psychology at the University of Rochester, recently was named to the dean’s list in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering for the spring 2008 semester.

Glosser is the daughter of Michael and Marilyn Glosser of Everett, and a graduate of Cascade High School in Everett.

Emily Sadler of Everett recently was named to the dean’s list for the 2007-08 academic year at Lake Forest College.

The dean’s list recognizes students who have attained a grade point average of at least 3.60 for two consecutive semesters.

Sadler is a graduate of Cascade High School.

Lake Forest College is a national liberal arts institution in Illinois.

Monroe student earns scholarship

Patrick Mahoney of Monroe recently was among 20 University of Portland students selected to participate in the university’s Entrepreneur Scholars Program for the 2008-09 academic year.

Mahoney is a senior majoring in global business, marketing and management and Spanish.

The Entrepreneur Scholars Program guides students in the design and implementation of business ventures.

Acceptance into the program is open to all undergraduate students.

Employee’s union awards scholarships

The Public School Employees of Washington, Service Employees International Union, or SEIU No. 1948, recently awarded two scholarships worth $1,000 to children of union members.

Breanna Miller, a graduate of Darrington High School plans to attend Northwest University. Breanna Miller is the daughter of union member Tammy Miller.

Logan Throndsen is the son of union member Kay Throndsen. Logan Throndsen plans to attend Central Washington University.

The union represents classified educational support professionals in K-12 public schools. Each year Puget Sound Energy awards $15,000 in scholarships.
