Arlington graduating seniors honored

Arlington High School honored graduating seniors during the Senior Awards Night on May 17.

The following students were recognized as valedictorians: Sara Abramowicz, Sarah Gonzales, Cheryl Holsworth, Michele Holsworth, Corinne McClure, Caroli

ne Rensel, Star Soriano, Cornell Garcia, Melissa Webb, Kristin Wreggelsworth, Bryson Olson and Gig Soriano.

McClure also was recognized as a Washington Scholar Alternative for 2011, and Olson was named the Phi Beta Kappa scholar for the class.

Laura Dietz, Garrett Churchill and Claire Driscoll were honored for their hard work earning associate degrees from Everett Community College in addition to earning their high school diplomas.

Many students received scholarships from local community organizations.

David Duskin announced the Stanley D. Boyer-Duskin Family Scholarship to the outstanding male and female for the senior class. The women’s award was shared by Melissa Webb and Cheryl Holsworth. The men’s award went to Hunter Amundson.

Arlington students win video contest

Arlington High School students Claire Logan and Kayti McCluskey-Russo took first place in the creative category of the Washington State Board of Education video contest.

Students created videos showing the importance of math, science, technology, and career and technical education courses, and were judged on content, theme, cinematography, creativity, delivery and other factors.

Arlington High School video students Kiley Smith, Kevin Rasanen and JD Boston participated in the Balfour/SchoolTube “Make Your Mark” video contest where they showcased how they will make their mark on the world.

Two of the students received Flip video cameras and one received an iPod Touch.

Monroe grad gets Fulbright scholarship

Tim Ohlsen, a 2009 graduate of Monroe High School and student at the University of Pittsburgh, has been awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study at the Newcastle Summer Institute in England.

Ohlsen was an all- district basketball player and sprinter in high school, started a math tutoring club and volunteered in youth mentorship programs.

Now a junior at the University of Pittsburgh on a full-tuition scholarship, he is pursuing degrees in neuroscience and chemistry.

The Summer Institute will give Ohlsen an opportunity to study science from a global perspective, which he feels will be invaluable in a future research or medical career.

“I’m looking forward to representing my country and school for this program, as well as experiencing the U.K. culture so closely,” he said.

“I hope to return with new perspectives and greater ability to influence the world around me in a positive way.”

Arlington girl off to D.C. conference

Ezri Noe of Arlington, 11, was selected to participate in the Junior National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C.

The Presidents Elementary fifth-grader was among 250 middle school students from around the country chosen to participate in the conference.

The Junior National Young Leaders Conference teaches young people about the American tradition of leadership while helping them develop their own leadership skills.

Ezri has been dancing since age 4 and joined the Arlington School of Dance last year. She’s a member of her school’s performing group, Star Energy.

Ezri is also a Leader in Training at Smokey Point Community Church and has been involved in Hi-Cap, an educational program that works with high-achieving students.

She aspires to be a marine biologist.

Ezri is the daughter of Darrin and Shaela Noe.

Everett man on Wesleyan honor roll

Kjerstin Stupey of Everett was named to president’s honor roll for the spring semester at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kan.

Local students are Portland grads

Riley Henricks of Edmonds, Rosie Cullen of Lynnwood and Kaitlin Hoban of Everett have earned bachelor’s degrees from the University of Portland.
