Arlington Rotary students of month
The Rotary Club of Arlington recently recognized students of the month for May.
Taylor Shepherd, Christine Serica, Sarah Peterson and Darby Throndsen were honored.
The students were awarded vouchers for a $50 donation to give to a nonpro
fit at school or in the community.
Taylor is an eighth-grader at Haller Middle School. As a member of the ASB executive council, he spearheaded efforts to build a basketball court outside for use during lunchtime.
Christine is a junior at Arlington High School, a member of the Respect Team, layout editor for the yearbook, and National Honor Society member.
Sarah, a junior at Darrington High School, has taken honors courses. She has a cumulative GPA of 3.9, and is a student athlete and community volunteer.
Darby is a Lakewood Middle School student who is regarded as a leader. She is a board member of Where Everybody Belongs.
Students in national honor society
Several students at Columbia College-Marysville/Everett have been inducted into the local chapter of Sigma Beta Delta International Honor Society for business, management and administration:
Austin Demary, Dennis Gerik, Tracey Gerik, Faith Jeffrey, Tatiana Sarmiento and Karisa Viall.
Kamiak student now a Whitman grad
Jonathan Wells has graduated magna cum laude from Whitman College in Walla Walla.
The 2007 Kamiak High School graduate is the son of Connie and Russ Wells of Edmonds.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and philosophy, and was elected to the Whitman Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.
Wells plans to study for a doctorate degree in mathematics and teach at the college level.
Students earn college degrees
The following local students recently graduated from Whitworth University in Spokane:
Katherine Chamblin and Kelley Jansen of Mukilteo; Benjamin Everett of Lake Stevens; Adriane Lunday of Arlington; Lesley Richter of Snohomish; Ashley Smith of Oak Harbor; and Ronald Whitley of Marysville.
Caitlin Jacques of Mountlake Terrace and Brendan Wesley Smith of Monroe received bachelor’s degrees from Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, Calif.
Brandon Duncan of Lynnwood and Amy Savage of Arlington graduated from Rice University in Houston, Texas.
District recognizes students of month
The following students were recognized by the Lake Stevens School Board as outstanding secondary students at the June 8 school board meeting.
Lake Stevens High School: Sarah Gluck and Aaron Piega, 10th grade; Carl Balke and Monica Sykes, 11th grade; and Sarah Bliven and Ken Tosh, 12th grade.
Cavelero Mid High School: Tallon Cote and Anna Green, eighth grade; and Nicole Bilyeu and Jacob Irwin, ninth grade.
Lake Stevens Middle School: Kennedy Long and Braden Smutz, sixth grade; and Hunter Dearden and Taylor Hartt, seventh grade.
North Lake Middle School: Trevor Allen and Elise Gooding, sixth grade; and Jacob Eason and Stephanie Wislen, seventh grade.
Apple Award recipients honored
Lake Stevens School District employees were recognized on June 8 for creating a positive, caring and productive school environment.
The May recipients of the Apple Award are: Joni Peterson, first-grade teacher at Mount Pilchuck Elementary; Ed Sherrow, custodian at Cavelero Mid High; Pat Simmons, maintenance technician at the Lake Stevens School District; and Kathi Schultz, secretary at the Lake Stevens School District.
Student earns academic scholarship
Western Washington University student Stephanie Dilbeck recently received a $1,000 Alumni Emerging Leaders Scholarship for the 2011-2012 academic year.
Dilbeck is the daughter of Jeff and Tina Dilbeck of Lynnwood. She is majoring in special education and elementary education, has earned a 3.68 GPA and is expecting to graduate in December 2012.
The Alumni Emerging Leaders Scholarship is for students who demonstrate academic or leadership promise, resiliency, determination and other qualities.
Local students named to honor roll
Kaitlin De Jong of Everett, Cullen Cantwell of Marysville and Barbara Noste of Camano Island were named to the spring semester president’s honor roll at the University of Great Falls in Great Falls, Mont.
The president’s honor roll recognizes students who have received a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
Becca Benedict of Camano Island was named to the spring semester dean’s list at the University of Great Falls. The dean’s list recognizes students who have received a 3.5 or higher grade point average.
Snohomish resident a Whitworth graduate
Caitlin Richardson of Snohomish recently received a bachelor of arts degree in business management from Whitworth University.
Whitworth University, in Spokane, is a private liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian Church.
Mill Creek woman a San Diego grad
Kira Johal of Mill Creek graduated from the University of San Diego on May 22.
Johal earned a bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in sociology. She was an undergraduate preceptorial assistant and was a homework volunteer at Montgomery Middle School in San Diego, Calif.
She participated in Emerging Leaders and studied abroad in Oxford, England. She also played intramural softball.
Johal is a 2007 graduate of Henry M. Jackson High School. Her parents are Neena Johal and the late Baljit Johal.
Local students on dean’s lists
Greer Zimmerman of Edmonds and Elise Wolff of Everett were named to dean’s list for the spring semester at Beloit College in Beloit, Wis.
Jennifer Kriegel of Stanwood and Megan Thees of Lynnwood made the dean’s list for spring semester at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont.
Student to compete in canoe competition
Laurel Graves of Arlington competed in the 24th annual American Society of Civil Engineers National Concrete Canoe Competition at University of Evansville (Indiana) June 16-18.
Graves, a student at Washington State University in Pullman, competed against teams from engineering schools in the United States and Canada.
All 23 teams in the national competition were judged on the design, construction, innovative features and racing ability of each concrete canoe.
