Students take part in Future Business Leaders competition
Granite Falls High School sophomore Pooja Sethi and freshman Aakash Sethi have qualified for the national Future Business Leaders of America competition in Orlando, Fla., this summer.
Pooja took first place in the Account
ing I category at the state competition held April 6 in Spokane. Aakash placed second in the Cyber Security category.
At the national event, Pooja and Aakash will compete, attend leadership activities and learn about shaping their career goals through workshops and exhibits.
Five other
students represented Granite Falls High School at the state conference: Kyle Kamins, Erin Hurn, Aron Scalf, Luis Torres and Ciera Scown.
Students at Lakewood High School also competed in the stae conference along with 1,600 others from around the state.
Juniors Spencer Hatch, Sean Kustra and Aaron Nech had a good performance in the preliminary round of the Business Ethics competition and made it to the final round. Freshman Michaela Boyd made it to the final round of the FBLA Creed competition.
In addition to the competitive events, students attended workshops and toured Gonzaga and Whitworth universities.
Four students named top Lakewood grads
Ternessa Coa and Hanna Clark are co-valedictorians, and Samantha Adams and Skyler Tetreau are co-salutatorians for Lakewood High School’s 2011 graduating class.
The honors go to the graduates with the highest and second highest cumulative grade point averages.
Lynnwood student on Germany exchange
Danil Vishniakov of Lynnwood has been awarded a scholarship to go to Germany next year.
The Mountlake Terrace High School student will join a group of 50 American high schoolers sponsored by ASSE International Student Exchange Programs. The students will live with a host family and attend high school in Germany for one academic year.
A group of German scholarship students will live with American host families to attend high school.
The U.S. State Department and the German government have co-sponsored the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Scholarship program since 1983.
Art center names photo contest winners
The Schack Art Center received more than 190 entries for its 2011 Black & White Photography Contest.
The contest was open to all Snohomish County High School students.
The center awarded the grand prize to Dylan Boyce, a junior at Lake Stevens High School, for his digital entry “Hidden Scars.”

Honorable mention: Kayla Andrews, Meadowdale High School 11th-grader, for “Remember Me”; and Sienna Coppa, Glacier Peak High School 12th-grader for “Duck Under.”

Jackson High School 11th-grader, first place for “Desolate Plains”; Marjorie Anderson, Meadowdale High School 12th-grader, second place for “Clover”; Karli Fritz, Stanwood High School 12th-grader, third place for “Night Clock”; and Alexandra Bohnhoff, Edmonds-Woodway High School 12th-grader, fourth place for “Lost Inside Words.”
