Agriculture mechanics teacher honored
The American Welding Society recently honored Darryl Main, Stanwood High School’s agriculture mechanics teacher, at its annual FabTech International and AWS Welding Show in Chicago.
Main was awarded with the 2009 Howard E. Adkins Memorial Instructor Membership Award, which recognizes instructors who have advanced the knowledge of welding among their students.
He was nominated for the award by one of his former students, Lena Rink, a 2008 Stanwood High School graduate.
“My goal and the goal of Stanwood High School is to give students the best opportunity to achieve skills and knowledge to prepare them for life after high school no matter what endeavor they wish to pursue,” Main said. “And so to be recognized by the American Welding Society with the Howard E. Adkins Memorial Instructor Membership Award for making sure that my students are successful in the future is just an honor.”
Main, who helped his students start an American Welding Society student chapter four years ago, has a bachelor of science degree in agricultural education. He also holds a master’s degree in education from Lesley College, and his endorsements in education include a Work Based Learning certificate, and Career and Technical Education Administration certificate.
Everett grad headed for Luther College
Nickolas Erickson of Everett was recently accepted for admission for the 2010-11 academic year to Luther College in Iowa. Erickson received a Regent Scholarship.
Luther College has an enrollment of 2,500 students and offers a liberal arts education with bachelor’s of arts degrees in 60 majors and pre-professional programs.
Lynnwood student to attend St. George
Sarah Ripperger of Lynnwood was recently accepted to the St. George University School of Veterinary Medicine in Grenada, West Indies.
Her parents are Andrew and Louise Stockholm.
Ripperger earned degrees in biology and zoology with a minor in chemistry at Humboldt State University in Arcata, Calif.
Four Lakewood teachers certified
Lakewood High School teachers, Elizabeth Davis, Mike Fellows, Jeff Sowards and Jane Wyatt, recently received their national board certification. These four teachers are the first Lakewood teachers to earn their certification.
National board certification is a voluntary assessment program designed to identify, recognize and reward accomplished teachers who meet high and rigorous standards based on what teachers should know and be able to do. To apply for this program a teacher must have taught for three years with a valid state teaching certificate.
Teachers who attain and teachers and principals who hold a valid certificate from the National Board for Professional Teachings Standards during the 2009-10 school year will receive an annual bonus of $5,090. The bonus is directed and funded by the Washington state Legislature.
Harbour Pointe aids school in East Africa
Each year, the students at Harbour Pointe Middle School in Mukilteo hold an International Drive.
For the past several years, the drive has benefitted the Mukono Boarding and Day School in Uganda, East Africa. Harbour Pointe partners with the Sister Schools organization in Seattle to get the donations to the school.
Recently the Leadership Class students and their teacher, Doug Montzingo, filled the truck from Sister Schools with the 4,962 items collected during the drive. Assorted school supplies, books and clothing were boxed and are on their way to the students at the Mukono School.
Students and staff participated in a Dollar Days Event during the drive where they were asked to bring in $1 each to donate to the purchase of a copy machine for the school. A total of $751 was collected.
