Schubert would have really wanted his “Mass in G” to be sung in an expressive way, with a lot of passion and a lot of heart.
“This is a work with a big, rich sound,” said conductor Frank DeMiero. “The piece itself, it tells you ‘help me to sound good.’”
Turns out that Schubert’s piece will get some expert help this weekend when members of the Sno-King Community Chorale, two of whom are also singers with the Seattle Opera, present this familiar work with full accompaniment from the Cascade Symphony Orchestra.
Schubert’s “Mass in G” and Vivaldi’s “Gloria” are the featured works during the Chorale’s “Musica da Coro Concert,” which can be heard at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 6215 196th St. SW, Lynnwood. Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for students and seniors and $5 for children 12 and under. For tickets, call 425-673-1242 or visit www.sno-kingchorale.org.
The two Seattle Opera singers are married couple Tom Hingson, a baritone, and his wife, Melanie, a soprano. Both have been members of the chorale for many years before they started volunteering for Seattle Opera. They paid their dues and now are under contract with the opera company, DeMiero said.
“They have that kind of passion for wanting to achieve that kind of level,” DeMiero said. “It’s sort of like if you are playing baseball and getting out of the minors.”
Soprano Diane Jackson and tenor Craig McDonald will also be featured.
DeMiero said he chose the Schubert because of its melodic qualities and chose the Vivaldi as a contrast piece because of its energy and flare.
“And the acoustics in Trinity Lutheran are perfect for this kind of music,” DeMiero said. “The acoustics captures the essence of the composers’ sound and the ambiance … it’s a good place to hear our chorale.”
