Food, fall and football add up to tailgating season.
Whether you picnic in the parking lot before your favorite college game or create a buffet on your coffee table, you need lots of hearty food to sustain the fans. And just in time to inspire you comes "Tailgates to Touchdowns: Fabulous Football Food," a new book by food and cooking expert Nina Swan-Kohler.
The book, as would be expected, makes use of lots of football puns, but not so many as to be irritating, and the recipes are straight forward. Chapters include "The Gridiron," with grilling tips and recipes; "Super Bowls," covering soups and chilies, many of which have a biscuity accompaniment; and "Sidelines," for salsas and spreads.
The paperback book has lots of full-color photos to help you achieve success.
Don’t be afraid to tackle these recipes.

In large bowl, using a pastry blender or two knives, cut shortening into flour and cornmeal mix until shortening pieces are the size of small peas. Stir in buttermilk and cheese until dough forms a ball.
Turn dough out onto surface dusted with additional flour. Fold dough in half 5 to 7 times to knead (do not overwork dough), adding just enough flour to keep dough from sticking to your hands. Divide dough into 6 balls. Gently roll out each ball to 1/4-inch thickness (about a 6-inch circle). Using a pizza cutter, cut each circle into 8 wedges. Place smoked sausage on rounded side of each wedge. Roll dough around sausage toward center. Place on baking sheet coated with cooking spray. Bake at 500 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown.
Makes 48 appetizers.
Note: If you plan to cook burgers or brats on the grill, simply wrap these appetizers (already cooked) in foil and heat them on the grill while the coals are heating.
