The 40th anniversary season swings into song with a nod toward history for Orchestra Seattle/Seattle Chamber Singers, with the first concert commemorating the start of uprisings against communist rule and the fall of the Berlin Wall.
In 1989, on the same week of OSSCS’s first concert, a demonstration of more than 70,000 people occurred in Leipzig, the heart of anti-Communist resistance in East Germany. Less than one month later, the Berlin Wall fell. One year after that, Leonard Bernstein conducted Beethoven’s ninth symphony at East Berlin’s Schauspielhaus (Playhouse) in celebration of this historic event.
OSSCS’ commemorative concert features Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 9” and conductor George Shangrow will pair it with the Bach Cantata, “Jesu, der du meine Seele (No. 78),” in honor of Bach’s hometown, Leipzig.
Orchestra Seattle/Seattle Chamber Singers is made up of a 60-member semi-professional orchestra and a 55-voice chorus.
The concert begins at 7 p.m. Sunday at First Free Methodist Church, 3200 Third Ave. W., Seattle. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and $10 for students. Call 800-838-3006 or go to www.brownpapertickets.com or www.osscs.org.
