“Lucia di Lammermoor” is, by far, Gaetano Donizetti’s most popular work.
The opera tells the story of a woman driven to insanity and murder, and features a “mad scene,” perhaps the most famous in all of opera.
“Lucia di Lammermoor” is known as a vehicle for coloratura sopranos and it helped make Maria Callas famous.
The story features clandestine romance, feuding families and political intrigue. It inspires unforgettable melodies and bravura singing, making this opera one of the most frequently performed.
Seattle Opera opens its production Saturday with eight performances running through Oct. 30.
Italian conductor Bruno Cinquegrani makes his Seattle debut along with Polish soprano Aleksandra Kurzak as Lucia and Croatian baritone Ljubomir Puskari as Enric, Lucia’s brother. Soprano Davinia Rodriguez, a native of the Canary Islands, shares the role of Lucia and also will make her first appearance at McCaw Hall.
Tickets start at $25 at seattleopera.org or 800-426-1619.
