William Gibson and Sherman Alexie lead the list of authors who will appear at Bumbershoot at the end of August.
The music draws the most attention at the annual festival. But the official name is “Bumbershoot: Seattle’s Music and Arts Festival,” and literary events are growing in popularity.
This year, in addition to Gibson and Alexie, the lineup includes Saul Williams, Dan Clowes, Starlee Kine, Joshua Ferris, Edmund White, Chip Kidd and Sarah Shun-lien Bynum.
Sara Bynoe will represent tormented teen verse in a show that combines stand-up and poetry, “F—k Off and Die: Tales in Teen Angst Poetry.”
And for fans of haiku: Write a haiku, post it on the Bumbershoot Facebook wall and register the poem at bumbershoot.org/haiku-contest.htm. Winners will receive a Bumbershoot poster. The big prize is two three-day passes to the festival.
Bumbershoot runs from Aug. 30 to Sept. 1 at Seattle Center.
Most book and author events will take place at the Literary Arts Stage at the Leo Kreielsheimer (the “Leo K.”) Theatre and the Boeing Performing Arts Stage at the Bagley Wright Theatre.
The complete lineup will be announced in mid-July.
