Hearing a good sermon is not the only reason to head out to church this Sunday.
Three classical concerts are planned for area churches in Stanwood, Everett and Lake Stevens with first-rate musicians performing some heavenly music.
The three concerts are planned at the following churches:
Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church: An organist backed by 1,572 pipes, a French horn player and two singers are on the program.
The church’s continuing concert series features organist Norma Aamodt-Nelson, whose talents are well known throughout the Puget Sound. She is Minister of Music at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lynnwood, where she runs a lay choral and instrumental music program and is primary organist.
Aamodt-Nelson will be joined by Michelle Rockwood, who teaches band and choir at Stanwood Middle School and is principal French horn player for the Everett Symphony.
Rockwood began playing horn at the age of 9 in Homer, Alaska, and continued her studies at Western Washington University, where she earned a degree in music education and performance.
Rockwood has been a member of the Everett Symphony for 25 seasons and has performed in Vienna, Austria, as well as Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Erik and Anna Ronning are the singers on the program. Erik Ronning is the vocal choir teacher at Stanwood High School and choir director at Our Saviour’s Lutheran in Stanwood.
His wife, Anna, is a member of the Mirinesse Women’s Choir of Seattle.
The program begins at 3 p.m. Sunday at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 27201 99th Ave. NW, Stanwood.
The First Presbyterian Church: Seirm, an ensemble of 20 singers and instrumentalists who perform traditional and modern Scottish Gaelic music, will perform at Everett’s First Presbyterian Church.
Scottish Gaelic music, which includes traditional melodies, laments and reels, has been performed for more than 1,000 years.
Seirm has performed at the Northwest Folklife Festival and at Highland games throughout Puget Sound.
The performance begins at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, 2936 Rockefeller Ave., Everett. Admission is by donation.
Ebenezer Lutheran Church: Graham Logen, a senior bassoon performance major at Pacific Lutheran University, will present a solo recital with works by Mozart and Devienne.
Iris Ingram of Lake Stevens will accompany him on the piano.
Logen, 23, of Stanwood began his musical career in the Everett, Cascade and Seattle Youth Symphonies. He traveled around Europe performing as a chamber and orchestral musician during three summers.
He has won the Washington Music Education Association State Soloist Competition, the Tacoma Philharmonic Recital Competition and the Pacific Lutheran University Student Soloists Competition.
The recital begins at 1 p.m. Sunday at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, 2711 117th Ave. NE, Lake Stevens.
