50 YEARS AGO (1959)

Dick Abrams was named head football coach at Everett High School after Jim Ennis and assistant Bill Dunn announced their retirement. .

Top winners in the Junior Catholic Daughters of America were Kathryn Waltz, first year; Mary Bueannagel, second year; Mary Dumond, third year; LaVern Backes, best citywide; and Barbara Aubin, runner-up.

25 YEARS AGO (1984)

Fifth-grade classes of Everett’s Whittier Elementary School staged an “I Love America” assembly for the school, which included presentation of a check in the amount of $31.90 to principal Leslie Elsaesser for the Statue of Liberty renovation fund.

50 YEARS AGO (1959)

40 Million Everett, at 1001 Broadway, was appointed factory-authorized dealer for the French-built Renault automobile. Manager Hugh McCullough said the Renault had less style obsolescence and was the largest selling foreign four-door car in the U.S.

Mayor Jack Bennett announced that he had designated the seven men who would be appointed to the planning commission of the newly formed city of Lynnwood. They were Dean Echelbarger, Glen Halter, Don Westlin, Archie Marlin, John McCready, Kenneth Killien and Dr. A.V. Romano.

25 YEARS AGO (1984)

Bruce Barcott, a Snohomish High School senior, was selected to represent the state of Washington at a May 11 luncheon with President Ronald Reagan in Washington, D.C., as part of the president’s Academic Fitness Awards program. He would be joined by math and science teacher Curt Johnson.

Siri Ann Wilbur of Stanwood was one of 500 finalists in the U.S. Department of Education’s Presidential Scholars Program. Selection of 141 Presidential Scholars was in early May. Winners would go to the national capital to meet with elected representatives, educators and other officials.
