50 YEARS AGO (1959)
On The Herald front page was a photograph of Georga Dee Martin holding a flat of strawberries grown on the 30-acre farm Plato Stroud immediately north of Granite Falls. The berries would go all the way back to Chicago and other Midwest cities. The summer’s luscious yield was being harvested by nearly 400 pickers.
A new billboard-sized sign soon would go up on Highway 99 north of town urging people to stop, shop and stay in Everett, the friendly city. Two of Everett Chamber of Commerce’s major committees — Tourist and Trade Development — proposed erecting the sign.
25 YEARS AGO (1984)
Awarded a “Letter of Appreciation” for superior performance of duty was Navy Chief Petty Officer Vernon L. Robert of Everett, a crew member aboard the amphibious dock ship Ogden, home-ported in San Diego, Calif.
Claire Humphries’ first-prize centennial quilt, selected at the recent dedication of the pioneer Gehl Log Home in Marysville’s Jennings Park, was on display at Sew and Tell fabric shop in Marysville. Second in the quilting contest by the Marysville Historical Society was Getchell Fire Auxiliary. Third place went to Anna Apelgate.
