50 YEARS AGO (1959)
Congressman Jack Westland announced that the Navy Reserve Shipyards on the waterfront were declared surplus today and available for purchase. The yard, considered one of the finest industrial sites on the water in the Pacific Northwest, contained over 40 acres and 26 buildings including seven large cranes and a complete machine shop. The shipyard had been built in the early 1940s for the war effort.
The Everett City Council had declared 23rd Street an arterial east of Broadway. To remind motorists to be sure to stop when they reached 23rd, Howard Rooney and Harry Hansen were busy with a post-hole digger preparing to erect the necessary stop signs.
25 YEARS AGO (1984)
Christopher Little, president and publisher of The Herald for four years, was leaving next month to become senior vice president/director of administration of Newsweek Inc. His successor was Larry Hanson, The Herald’s executive vice president.
Edmonds Superintendent Hal Reasby kicked off the new year with the endorsement of the upcoming school levy from three mayors: M.J. Hrdlicka of Lynnwood, Larry Naughten of Edmonds and Lolc Anderson of Mountlake Terrace.
