50 YEARS AGO (1959)
Ralph Barton, Jerry Skaare and Tim Bortner were practicing for the Golden Wings annual “Clean Up Campaign” at Everett High School. It was for the Teens Against Polio division of the March of Dimes.
The National Awards committee of Camp Fire announced the awarding of Torch Bearer in Social Leadership, their highest honor, to Patricia Ostlund.
25 YEARS AGO (1984)
Nineteen county law officers and firefighters clad in wet suits jumped into 48-degree water at Hat Island for the long four and a half mile paddle to Seaview Park in Mukilteo. They were raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. First to reach Mukilteo were sheriff’s deputies Herb Oberg and Russ Quay.
Finalists for the Herald’s annual Man and Woman of the Year in Sports were Tom Campbell, cross country coach in Edmonds; Dick Cardinal, football coach in Lakewood; Jeff Knudson, championship golfer from Everett; Pat Sullivan, soccer coach in Everett; Troy Summers, boxing coach in Marysville; Lorraine Borman, figure skating coach in Edmonds; Tammie Miller, bowler from Mukilteo; Jennifer Ponath, track and field star from North Seattle; Delores Sutherland, basketball coach in Everett, and Stephanie Vanderberg, champion swimmer from Lynnwood.
