50 YEARS AGO (1958)
Incoming President Herb Johnson of the Toastmasters Club received the gavel from outgoing President James Ross. Looking on were Norman Lea, secretary-treasurer; Bob Treibel, education vice president; Robert J. Brown, administrative vice president, and Charles Playle, assistant secretary-treasurer.
Two lanes of the new route of Highway 99 from Stimson’s Crossing to the Stillaguamish River were opened this morning. The other two lanes couldn’t be opened until work on the cut at Portage Creek was completed. In other highway news, Highway 1-A from Lake Stevens to Getchell was nearing completion.
25 YEARS AGO (1983)
Robertson Aircraft Corp. at Paine Field would soon be delivering a police model of the ultra light aircraft it gave away in a drawing during the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in Detroit. Marketing director Alex Reuss would make the presentation.
Sixth-grade teachers Jim Brigley and Ken Taylor at Hillcrest Elementary had their students stage a mock session of the United Nations regarding the Soviet downing of a South Korean jetliner last month. The session was in Betty Kemp’s library. Students involved included French ambassador Jeff Skeels and Soviet Union ambassador Alesha Durfee.
