50 YEARS AGO (1958)
Betty LeGros of Everett, district representative for Florists’ Telegraph Delivery, demonstrated modern technique in arranging flowers at the FTD national convention in Miami, Fla. Design clinics were one of the highlights of the convention.
Almost ready for operation again was the portion of Hamilton Lumber company’s plant in Stanwood that burned last month. Plant officials expected to be back in full operation next week. Long a Stanwood landmark, the tall smokestack of the mill was no longer used.
25 YEARS AGO (1983)
Another remnant of “The City of Smokestacks” was gone today with the toppling of the stack at the old Weyerhaeuser Mill A. Debris from the stack — 210 feet high, 55 feet in circumference at the base, with 2-foot thick walls — caused at least one spectator to duck and cover as it went through a window of a home on Warren Street. Walt Maglasson III imploded the waterfront landmark.
The search for a gravesite was over. The tombstone of Owen W. Sims was returned to Marshland Cemetery through the work of Catherine Clausen and Norma Chapman. The latter was the caretaker of a number of small cemeteries in the county.
