50 years ago (1963)
Millie Towne had opened Millie’s Craft and Hobby Studio at 3511 Rucker Ave. She planned to start classes on crafts of candles, copper, flower making, mosaics, fiberglass and Christmas decorations.
The people who lived along the river in the neighborhood of 21st and East Grand were left without easy access to the rest of town when someone completely wrecked the flight of stairs descending to the railroad right-of-way. The houses were on either side of the tracks and the people living there had temporarily erected a ladder to replace the steps that had served for at least 40 years.
25 years ago (1988)
The election results were in. Snohomish County broke from the rest of the state in backing victorious George Bush for President. Most in Washington voted for Michael Dukakis. County voters also supported the winner in the senatorial race, Slade Gorton, who defeated Mike Lowry.
Everett-based John Fluke Mfg. Co. had a good year, reporting a profit of $12.5 million on $225 million sales in fiscal 1988. Booming international sales, gradually improving American sales, a year-end cluster of government shipments and unexpected fourth-quarter military orders produced the record sales.
