50 years ago (1961)
A new bathing and picnic facility was open in Everett. With the cooperation of the Port Commission and Park Department, Jetty Island could now be reached by special boat at the west end of 14th Street. The jetty offered the whitest, smoothest, hardest-packed sand in the Northwest.
At Lewis Street Park in Monroe, a dedication of a fountain honoring the late Mark Forgey was taking place. Also, four flowering trees honored Gov. Roland Hartley, state Sen. Milton Stevens, Frank Wagner and R.J. Byron.
25 years ago (1986)
Lee Smith, 13, had a special exhibit at the Stanwood & Camano Community Fair. It was on his father’s successful heart transplant surgery. Del Smith, 43, reported he was doing fine and feeling better than before. He was the second heart recipient in the state in an operation performed at University Hospital in Seattle.
The Everett Giants minor league baseball players would get some words of wisdom from baseball great Willie Mays who was coming to town. “Say Hey” had spent 22 years in the majors with the San Francisco Giants. He was coming to Everett to spread a little goodwill for the organization
