50 years ago (1961)
Everett’s hotels and motels as well as those on the highways near town would be taxed next weekend. The Eagles throughout the state were coming to town. Harold Secor of Everett was president of the state organization and had lined up and outstanding program for the three days.
Ed Schencking, owner of Mission Beach Resort, tired out the 260-foot monorail launcher just completed at his place off Mission Bar. It would permit all-weather launching and retrieving at the resort. Equipped with a pair of one-ton hoists, it could accommodate larger boats.
25 years ago (1986)
Monte’s, a men’s shop operated by Monte Smalley that began as a tie shop 40 years ago, was closing its doors. It joined three other businesses on the corner of Colby Avenue and California Street in the heart of the shopping district that had closed recently. The others were Penney’s, Hurd’s and the Children’s Collection.
Captain Larry’s Select Seafood & Provisioning Co. was open in the Marhanlo Shopping Center in Monroe. The store sold seafood, gourmet food items, baking goods and cooking equipment. Owners were Larry and Anne DeHaven.
