50 years ago (1961)
Mary Nell Harper, a registered nurse and native of Everett, was returning to Dembi-Dolo in western Ethiopia within a few days after a year’s leave in the United States. Harper, who was beginning her third term in Ethiopia, had worked for the past 12 years in a 30-bed hospital in this desolate section of the African nation. She was giving her farewell speech to friends at the Westminster Church.
Continuation of an Everett Planning Commission hearing on the site of a proposed new post office building would open Monday in City Council chambers. First public indication that the U.S. Post Office was planning a new structure came last week, when the government asked a declaration of special property use for the 3200 block of Wetmore Ave.
25 years ago (1986)
Shirley Brooks of Granite Falls was president of the Seattle Shores Chorus, affiliated with Sweet Adelines, Inc., which earned a second place in regional competition earlier this spring.
He Zhifan, Snohomish High School exchange teacher from China, and Eleanor Leight, director/choreographer of the Snohomish Historical Society’s annual vaudeville show, were to be honored at a Snohomish Chamber of Commerce luncheon at Harvey Field.
