50 years ago (1961)
Louise Marie Grabner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul J. Grabner of 3332 Federal Ave., would be heard by a hometown audience when the Washington State University orchestra came here for a Cascade High School uniform benefit conference. She played second violin for the WSU or
chestra.
The Marysville Junior Athletic Association was sponsoring a basketball clinic for fifth- and sixth-grade boys. Jack Hubbard, former Everett basketball coach now at Western Washington College of Education, was heading the clinic. Assisting were Marysville coaches Bob Hansen and Rich Hamlin.
25 years ago (1986)
A photograph showed smoke wafting from a Rucker Hill chimney. The related story was about the growing warnings about health risks from smoke produced by wood-burning stoves and fireplace inserts. Heavier regulation and cleaner burning stoves were expected in the future.
An old building, where once there was music, laughter and applause, and the dazzle of footlights, now sat vacant. The Marysville Opera House had broken windows, holes in the walls, a leaky roof and a warped oak dance floor. The former Odd Fellows lodge was built in 1911. Bernice Lashua and others wanted to see it come back to life.
