50 years ago (1961)
Sen. William A. Gissberg of Marysville announced that the State Highway Commission had agreed to make a lake north of Marysville a roadside park. The lake, formed by a “borrow” pit during highway construction, lay alongside Highway 99 and was popularly known as Square Lake because of its formation. It was very popular with swimmers and anglers because of its accessibility.
Dave Merrick and Mike Mahoney played basketball together at Everett High School two years ago, but now they are teammates on the Everett Junior College quint. They would see action as the Trojans opened their State Jaycee Conference hosting Centralia here tonight.
25 years ago (1986)
Sen. Dan Evans in a speech to the Everett Rotary Club, Everett Area Chamber of Commerce, and Snohomish County Economic Development Council, said he had every indication that the new Navy base here continued to be a high priority and would not fall prey to budget cuts.
Top Drawer, a fine ladies’ apparel shop in the Marks Building in downtown Snohomish, was quitting business. They were liquidating $50,000 inventory of apparel and accessories.
