50 years ago (1962)
Eagle of the Cross Award for outstanding members of the Catholic Youth Organization went to Ann Goerl of Everett’s Mary Magdalen Parish during the CYO convention in Seattle. The award was presented by the Rev. Frederick Stevenson of Washington, D.C. Goerl was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George F. Goerl, Rt. 5.
Bethia Wanser, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Wanser of Machias, was among the 4-H students at Washington State University who earned a trip to Washington, D.C. She had helped her family turn an old farmhouse into a modern home and make an overgrown 80-acre farm productive again.
25 years ago (1987)
Two Everett men won bowling championships during the state seniors tournament last month at Columbia Lanes in Wenatchee. Leroy Walter won the men’s A division singles title with a 708 score while Dick Wigren and his brother Chuck, of Lacey, won the men’s doubles crown with a 1336 score.
The Edmonds Tigers won the Edmonds District Swim Meet for the 12th year in a row. Coach Jerry Curtis said 10 members of the team were graduating seniors. Some of the individual winners were Tammy Custer, Jen Cook and Shelli Axtell.
