50 years ago (1962)
David DeMaw won the Pepsi Cola bottle cap guessing contest at the Everett Theater. For this he received a year’s pass for two from theater manager Richard Goldsworthy and 15 cases of Pepsi from bottler Gus Christensen. Carlo Irwin took second in the contest, and Alan Petersen third.
Frank J. Bueler, Snohomish dairy farmer, was named this week the county’s soil conservation farmer of the year. The award was presented by Snohomish Chamber of Commerce and Snohomish Soil and Water Conservation Service. He would represent the county at a state awards banquet in Longview.
25 years ago (1987)
Programs that provided chore services to senior citizens and the disabled were being renewed by Snohomish County. Mike Manley, administrator of the county’s Division of Aging, said that about 150 volunteers signed up annually providing the county’s senior community with about 10,000 hours of assistance a year.
Income from the 1987 Evergreen State Fair was up more than 18 percent over the previous year, fair receipts indicated. The 11-day county fair, which traditionally ended on Labor Day, drew a record attendance of 675,782 people. The previous high was 666,055 in 1985.
