50 years ago (1962)
A water tower, mill office building, riverside crane and barking machine were all that was left of Eclipse Mill on Everett’s east side after a spectacular fire. Fire Chief Earl Brower said he’d never seen anything go like the mill. In addition more than $600,000 worth of lumber went up in flames. Help came from Mukilteo, Marysville, Paine Field, Lake Stevens and Jim Creek.
To keep up with an expanding business, Maier Electric was in the process of constructing a new home. The business, now at 2008 Hewitt Avenue, was moving to 2607 Wetmore Avenue.
25 years ago (1987)
Members of the Everett Historical Commission would share their enthusiasm for architectural preservation May 16 when a pair of trolleys would make an hour-long tour of many of the city’s historical sights such as the Swalwell Building on Hewitt Avenue and the Grand Avenue historical district.
Kathi Bulfin, Edmonds Community College horticultural instructor, discussed the nuances of tomatoes with Ann Patullo of Mountlake Terrace, at the school’s biannual greenhouse. The sale taught students the retail-management end of horticultural, and usually brought in about $2,000 for the program.
