50 YEARS AGO (1960)
Ron Manning of the Exchange Club was declared winner by the Rev. Ivan Merrick, contest judge at the Kiwanis Club pancake eating contest. The winner polished off 13. Other contestants were Phil Blodgett, Kiwanian, and Don Loken, Rotarian.
The Everett High School football team won 19-0 in Bellingham last night to finish the football season with the first perfect record (9-0) since the 1952 “Wonder Team” that copped the mythical state championship. Among the Seagull standouts against the Red Raiders were Mike Dyre, Jack Myers, Dennis Scafe and Jim Langus. Everett coach Dick Abrams was a former Bellingham football star.
25 YEARS AGO (1985)
Until recently, hallucinogenic-mushroom pickers were the bane of a few Ebey Island farmers and other rural landowners. But now, according to police in Everett and Mill Creek, the pickers had discovered prime new harvesting areas in residential front yards.
Sheep raisers would get hints on preparing and maintaining their animals for winter at a workshop staged by Snohomish County Cooperative Extension at the Marysville Livestock Auction Sales arena. The speaker was Norm Gates, Washington State University extension veterinarian and sheep specialist.
