In commemoration of National Domestic Violence month, Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County (formerly the Center for Battered Women) will be hosting its fourth annual Hope Within Luncheon Sept. 30.
Doors open at 11:30 a.m. with the program running from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Everett Events Center.

Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County is dedicated to ending domestic abuse in Snohomish County by providing a wide range of services to victims and by facilitating social change. DVS offers assistance in numerous ways, including a 24-hour hotline that answers over 5,800 calls each year, an emergency shelter that houses more than 300 women and children, transitional housing for 20 families, support groups for more than 1,300, legal advocacy to more than 3,200 and a children’s program that serves more than 400 children.
Outstanding nurses sought
In recognition of nurses whose extraordinary efforts stand out, the March of Dimes Washington Chapter is seeking nominations for its seventh annual Western Washington Nurse of the Year Awards.
The awards event, which will be held Dec. 3 at the Hilton Bellevue, is presented by Premera Blue Cross. The event chairman is David Brooks, chief executive of Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. KING5 News anchor and HealthLink reporter Jean Enersen will emcee.
Proceeds from the event will benefit March of Dimes maternal and child health programs. Individual tickets, tables and sponsorships are available by calling 206-624-1373.

Registered nurses working at all staff levels in Western Washington who are in good standing with the Washington State Nursing Commission and have been a resident of Western Washington for at least one year are eligible to be nominated. In addition, any student currently enrolled in a nursing program in Western Washington is eligible for the New Generation category.
Extension offers garden classes
End tool abuse. Tools used for the wrong purpose, left in the rain, or put away dirty where the metal rusts and wooden handles weaken — protect your investment and learn about tool care at the WSU Garden Tool Series, Tuesdays, Sept. 15, 22 and 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the WSU Extension Education Center.
WSU Master Gardeners will share their tool tips and guide you through repair and sharpening techniques.
“Most gardeners don’t have a clue about tool care, but it’s an investment worth protecting,” said Sharon Collman, an extension educator.
Sessions include choosing the right tools, tool maintenance and small engine repair.
Fees are $20 per class or $50 for the series of three.
WSU Extension is also holding fall planting seminars. On Sept. 18, the topic will be bulbs; Sept. 19, the topic will be native plants.

Dogs, cats at Pet Fair
Purrfect Pals, a no-kill cat shelter and sanctuary, and Old Dog Haven are partnering with Olson’s Food Emporium and Mukilteo Pet Pros for a first annual Pet Fair from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19. The event will take place at the shopping complex on Highway 99 and Mukilteo Speedway in Lynnwood.
Events include cat and kitten adoptions, senior dog adoptions, a special wine tasting from noon to 5 p.m. and microchipping of pets from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. ($30 per pet for Avid chip). There will be free pet food samples, opportunities to fill the wish list of these two shelters, a free raffle of dog and cat items and a barbecue to benefit both charities.

Ÿ Those 55 years of age or older wanting to brush up on defensive driving skills can attend the AAA Driver Improvement Program from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Sons of Norway-Normanna Hall in Everett. The course gives practical guidance for traffic accident prevention and enhances driver safety and confidence. Successful course completion qualifies senior drivers for automobile insurance premium discounts.

Ÿ Older adults and their families can learn how seniors can stay active and independent at Rise Up Against Falling, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at the South County Senior Center.
The event will provide information on how seniors can prevent falls. A local fire department representative will speak about falls, which are a leading cause for 911 calls from older adults in Snohomish County. Other presentations will focus on exercise, vision, medication management and home safety.
Teens can apply for Japan trip
Youth For Understanding USA announces a new short-term scholarship opportunity for high school students to study in Japan: the Winter Japan-America Friendship Scholars Program.
The three-week Winter JAFS Program will run from Dec. 26 to Jan. 16. Students will have an orientation prior to departure and will then live with a host family. Immersed in Japanese society, YFU students will quickly learn both language and culture. Students will attend a local Japanese school for one week and will also have the opportunity to participate in excursions to museums and cultural events, including the Japanese New Year celebration.

Rain garden workshop
Learn how to beautify your landscape with a rain garden while at the same time help reduce storm water runoff and improve water quality in our local streams and Puget Sound.
During this two-hour workshop, you will learn all about rain gardens, what they are, how to build your own and the benefits of having one in your own landscape. As part of attending this workshop you will receive a copy of the “Rain Garden Handbook for Western Washington Homeowners,” which will give additional information on constructing a rain garden.
