50 YEARS AGO (1960)
Official designation of Walnut Street as a bypass route for state highways 1 and 15 was approved by Everett city commissioners after they received a favorable reply from the state highway department. Walnut had been resurfaced in 1958 as part of the Norton Avenue overpass project.
The grand opening was announced for Everett Child-Care Center Inc. at the corner of Hewitt and Grand avenues in Everett. The pre-school offered dancing, music, arts, crafts, an outdoor area and a cowboy room.
25 YEARS AGO (1985)
Everett Chamber of Commerce was hosting a historical tour. Spokesman Jim O’Neil said the tour was intended to give Everett residents a better understanding of the city’s history so that they could explain it to tourists. Participants would be transported to historic and scenic locations aboard the new Everett buses.
Jack B. Bennett, Lynnwood’s first mayor, died at 84. He became mayor when Lynnwood was incorporated in 1959 and held the post until 1964. Bennett, a real estate agent, set the tone for the pro-development stance the city had from the beginning.
