50 YEARS AGO (1960)
Steve Willits and Joe Bradbury of Boy Scout Troop 4 affixed the U.S. flag for the opening of Whittier Elementary School’s Memorial Day services. Other highlights of the program included recitation of “In Flanders’ Field” by Janice Wick, Karen Watters and Beth Hartley, and the sounding of taps by Dale Johnson.
Construction would begin next month for a 5-acre shopping center at the Safeway store in east Snohomish. Stores would be ultra-modern with all-glass fronts and Arizona sandstone walls. The first building to be constructed would be on the north side of the quadrangle facing south toward Safeway.
25 YEARS AGO (1985)
Cleanup of the ash and hazardous material created by Everett’s infamous massive tire fire could take six months and cost the city as much as $1 million, a consulting firm said today. At least at present the materials weren’t soaking into the landfill under the site.
Youngsters at Marysville’s Cascade Elementary School raised in excess of $1,300 to assist a project at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle for the elephants. PTA president Diana Haynes said the idea began with Cathy Tanner’s kindergarten classes.
