50 YEARS AGO (1960)
County Commissioner Ed McCollum explained to members of Snohomish Chamber of Commerce tentative plans for a new county building. It would be a five-story structure between the current courthouse and detention facility. McCollum said the current building was overcrowded, and he stressed the need for a new jail.
Spreading through the entire structure in a matter of minutes, fire destroyed the Viking Lumber Co. plant on the Mukilteo Speedway. Loss was estimated at more than $50,000. Peter Furan, plant manager, said only he and employee Roy Herrem were present when the blaze started. It was believed to have started from friction beneath a planer, probably from a knot.
