50 YEARS AGO (1960)
Everett’s Sen. Henry M. “Scoop” Jackson was considering accepting the position of national chairman for the Democratic Party. There was hope for a brief time that Sen. John F. Kennedy would name him as his running mate in the 1960 presidential election, but Kennedy chose Sen. Lynden Johnson instead.
Everett architect John C. Bryant was chosen by the Board of Trustees of Everett Public Library to draw up plans for the proposed extension and alteration of the present library building, which was dedicated in 1934. The Everett library was typical in that it outgrew its quarters in 25 years.
25 YEARS AGO (1985)
The first Lake Stevens Quadrithon, open to anyone 15 years or older and featuring running, swimming, biking and canoeing legs, would take place July 28. Competition would include five-member teams and Iron-Person categories.
Not everyone was a Schwinner, but the competition was hot-wheels and heavy at the second weekend of BMX bicycle racing at Scriber Lake High School. The 1,300-foot track was built on a former baseball field and had seven turns and nine jumps. Nearly 100 riders ages 6 to 24 participated.
