Sesame Street fun puts kids in the garden

Is everyone ready for a “Ladybug Picnic”?

Elmo, Abby Cadabby and their Sesame Street friends want to help Sunny the Sunflower grow, so they decide to move her from her too-small flowerpot to a spot in Big Bird’s garden. Families are invited to enjoy the group’s adventures during five shows today through Sunday at Comcast Arena.

As the neighborhood’s fairy-in-training, Abby Cadabby is called on to cast a spell to help Sunny grow. But something goes awry, and instead of Sunny getting bigger, the whole group shrinks. As a result, they end up seeing the world from a smaller perspective as they journey to the garden. A ladybug picnic is just part of the fun.

“One of my favorite parts of ‘Elmo’s Green Thumb’ is when Elmo, Zoe, Telly Monster, Rosita, Count, Honker and Abby Cadabby perform a high-energy dance number to a song called ‘A New Point of View,’ ” said Naeemah McCowan, 21, who plays Abby Cadabby. “In this part of the show, we are excited about the journey (we’re on) in Big Bird’s garden, and we learn about soil, sun and water and what makes flowers grow.”

Hence, the stage is set for some life lessons about the patience that nature requires, the roles of creatures in our ecosystem and the benefits of growing plants and recycling.

“Each year Sesame Street Live tries to educate kids on things that matter to all of us,” performance director Glen Taylor said. “This year we are teaching kids about the importance of taking care of our Earth.”
