Short plays, long laughs at Phoenix and Thumbnail theaters

Summer Shorts is a collection of 10-minute comedic plays peformed in Edmonds and Snohomish.

Your local theater will soon be filled with laughter.

Summer Shorts, featuring a collection of 10-minute comedic plays by local playwrights, runs July 20-29 at The Phoenix Theatre in Edmonds, and Aug. 3-12 at the Tim Noah Thumbnail Theater in Snohomish.

Each play — produced in collaboration by the two theater companies — features many of the Phoenix’s favorite actors and well-known local directors. The seven comedies tell a range of silly stories, from sea monsters to child birth, and are performed by the same cast.

“This is the first real collaboration with Thumbnail,” said Amy Gentry, spokeswoman for the Phoenix Theatre. “The goal is to bring more performing arts to Snohomish. Tim Noah Thumbnail has always been an amazing music venue. We’re excited to be able to help broaden their reach and include theater.”

Here’s a look at the comedies included in Summer Shorts this July and August:

“BFF.” By Debra Rich Gettleman. Remember telling your best pal in high school that she could count on you always and forever? Well, be careful. She might just take you up on it 40 years later.

“Corona Pass.” By Jane Ryan. Surrender your menfolk, and no one gets hurt.

“Maybe This Time.” By Cathy Kaufmann. Because girls just wanna have fuh-un!

“The Right Bowl.” By Pam Espinosa. When corn met broccoli, and broccoli met its match.

“Scoring Points.” By Diane Nichols. On Game Day, will a proposal be fumbled or score a touchdown?

“Sea Monster.” By Daniel Tarker. Will the sea monster win? Or will the tides turn?

“A True and Factual Account of the Birth of My Daughter.” By Eric Lewis. Birth is a beautiful experience, except for when it isn’t.

Eric Lewis is directing “BFF,” plus his own “A True and Factual Account of the Birth of My Daughter.” David Bailey will direct “Maybe This Time,” “Scoring Points” and “Sea Monster.” Jane Ryan is the director of her play, “Corona Pass,” as well as “The Right Bowl.”

Included in the cast are Melanie Calderwood, Susan Connors, Tom Cook, Laura Crouch, BriAnne Green, Steve Heiret, Tracy Kirkpatrick, Vanessa Langston and Asa Sholdez.

Summer Shorts is Phoenix and Thumbnail’s inaugural short play festival.

“Writer and director Eric Lewis pulled this entire festival together,” Gentry said. “Not only is he the organizer, he is directing a few of the plays, and wrote one.”
