Movie reviews
“3-Iron” HHHH A young man breaks into unoccupied houses, not to steal or vandalize but simply to make himself feel at home. This lyrical little number is another winner from South Korean director Kim Ki-duk. (In Korean, with English subtitles.) (R, for violence, subject matter.)
“The Amityville Horror” H A stupid remake of the 1979 hit about a family haunted in a house where a mass murder took place. The usual screechy music cues and belly-flopping dialogue prevail. (R, for violence, language.)
“Cinderella Man” HH The story of Depression-era boxer James J. Braddock (Russell Crowe), an inspirational tale given a rather dull treatment. Crowe and Paul Giamatti are in good shape, although Renee Zellweger’s scenes feel padded; director Ron Howard is most at home depicting the shock of the Depression in America. (PG-13, for violence.)
“Crash” HHH The lives of a group of people intersect in Los Angeles, with race a special hot button issue. Director Paul Haggis goes overboard on the operatic style, but some scenes have real emotional power. With Matt Dillon, Thandie Newton, Terrence Howard, Don Cheadle. (R, for language, violence, nudity.)
“Downfall” HHH This Oscar-nominated German film looks at the last ten days of Hitler’s life (as well as the people around him), in a blunt but engrossing way. Bruno Ganz gives a strong performance that never suggests Hitler is anything other than a psychopath. (In German, with English subtitles.) (R, for violence, subject matter.)
“Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room” HHH Documentary account of the fantasyland business of Enron, the hugely successful energy company that crashed and burned when people began examining their books. The movie has a few storytelling flaws, but the story itself is amazing, and infuriating. (Not rated; probably PG-13, for language.)
“Hitch” HH Will Smith is smooth as silk in this amusing romance, playing a date doctor for lovelorn men in Manhattan. The movie labors too hard on its plot contrivances, but the cast makes it easy enough to like. With Eva Mendes. (PG-13, for subject matter.)
“The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” HHH A bright, sarcastic romp through the cult novel by Douglas Adams, about an average Englishman (Martin Freeman) whisked away on a space trip after the Earth is destroyed. A fresh cast and a Monty Python spirit make this a welcome change of pace. (PG rating is for subject matter.) (PG, for subject matter.)
“House of Wax” H Loose remake of a Vincent Price semi-classic; this one has the usual bunch of dumb teenagers (Elisha Cuthbert and Paris Hilton among them) stranded in a small town with a wax museum. Slightly better than the ongoing run of horror-movie remakes. (R, for violence, language.)
“The Interpreter” HH A United Nations interpreter (Nicole Kidman) overhears a threat against a visiting African dictator; secret service man Sean Penn wonders if she is telling the truth. Sporadically intelligent writing and one great suspense sequence make this a so-so time-killer. (PG-13, for violence, language.)
“Kicking &Screaming” HHH It doesn’t matter that this movie is pure sports formula, because Will Ferrell is in the zone, that place where comedians can improvise their way to huge belly laughs. He plays the coach of a misbegotten kids’ soccer team; Robert Duvall is his father and rival. (PG, for subject matter.)
“Kingdom of Heaven” H “Gladiator” director Ridley Scott returns to swords and sandals with a remarkably dull story of the Crusades. Orlando Bloom, who does not graduate to movie-star status, goes to the Holy Land to battle over Jerusalem with the Muslims. (PG-13, for violence.)
“Kontroll” HHH Filmed entirely in the subways beneath Budapest, this wild and crazy movie follows a depressed ticket inspector as a killer haunts the underground. Sandor Csanyi makes an excellent leading man for this atmospheric thriller. (In Hungarian, with English subtitles.) (R, for violence.)
“Kung Fu Hustle” HHH An insane series of martial-arts fights makes this movie a wild and hilarious “Looney Tune” come to life. Stephen Chow stars and directs, with a great roster of kung fu fighters. (In Cantonese and Mandarin, with English subtitles.) (R, for violence.)
“Ladies in Lavender” HH A man washes up on the shore of Cornwall in the 1930s, interrupting the quiet lives of two sisters living there. Judi Dench and Maggie Smith are always watchable, but this tea-sipping movie doesn’t push them or the story hard enough. (PG-13, for subject matter.)
“Layer Cake” HH A British gangster film from the producer of “Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels,” and no better or worse than the usual run in the genre. Daniel Craig is the main draw as a smooth professional caught in a power play in London’s drug business. (R, for violence, language, subject matter.)
“The Longest Yard” H This remake of the 1974 Burt Reynolds prison-football movie suffers from being a comedy first, drama second. That, and Adam Sandler (in the Reynolds role) is not the man you want delivering the rousing halftime speech. (PG-13, for violence, language, subject matter.)
“Look at Me” HHH A witty look at the people in the orbit of a famous novelist (Jean-Pierre Bacri), most miserably his neglected, overweight teenage daughter. A civilized comedy, directed by co-star Agnes Jaoui. (In French, with English subtitles.) (PG-13, for subject matter.)
“Lords of Dogtown” HHH A dramatized version of the skateboarding adventures chronicled in the documentary “Dogtown and Z-Boys.” The 1970s birth of the sport’s extreme phase is given a messy but atmospheric look by director Catherine Hardwicke. With Emile Hirsch, Heath Ledger. (PG-13, for language, violence, subject matter.)
“A Lot Like Love” HH Every few years, Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet get together for a one-nighter-is that all it is, or are they meant for each other? This comedy gets points for its offbeat approach, but it doesn’t quite have the chemistry to go all the way. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)
“Mad Hot Ballroom” HHH Delightful documentary about fifth-graders in New York City preparing for a citywide ballroom dancing competition. Utterly winning, in the “Spellbound” tradition. (PG, for language.)
“Madagascar” HHHH A zippy and funny DreamWorks cartoon about four escaped zoo animals who must fend for themselves in the wild. It has good jokes, good slapstick, and one uproarious lemur king. (PG, for subject matter.)
“Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous” HH FBI agent Sandra Bullock is transformed into a sophisticate, only to be called into action when Miss United States is kidnapped in Las Vegas. The tone of niceness, the lessons for young audiences, and some physical comedy add up to nothing very memorable. (PG-13, for violence, subject matter.)
“Mondovino” HHH A documentary about the world of wine, with special emphasis on the creep of globalization into the vines. The film isn’t a dry vintage at all-it’s full of eccentric speakers, and the camera has an amusing tendency to stray from the subject. (PG-13, for language.)
“Monster-in-Law” HH Jane Fonda returns to the screen in razor-sharp form after a 15-year-absence, as a prospective mother-in-law who tries to sabotage her son’s upcoming marriage to a nobody (Jennifer Lopez). Not much of a film, but the women are fun. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)
“Robots ” HH Computer animation powers this story of a young robot in the big city. Lots of chase scenes and celebrity voices (Ewan McGregor, Robin Williams, Halle Berry) don’t add up to real delight, as this one’s a little too close to video-game territory. (PG, for subject matter.)
“Sahara” HH Pretty cheesy adventure movie with Matthew McConaughey as Dirk Pitt, hero of Clive Cussler’s countless novels. Good location shooting can’t save the overblown plot, which begins with a lost Civil War gunboat rumored to be in Africa. (PG-13, for violence.)
“Sin City” HHH A comic-book lollapalooza derived from Frank Miller’s graphic novels, this mostly black-and-white picture is unrelentingly inventive…and assaultive. The unsavory roster of thugs and hookers is filled out by Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Bruce Willis, and Jessica Alba. (R, for violence, nudity, language.)
“Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith” HHHH Final production in the “Star Wars” saga, which begins in the fluffy mode of Parts I and II but becomes a cooler, darker movie when Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) turns toward the dark side of the Force. George Lucas rolls out the impressive hardware and the political metaphors with equal authority, leaving you to wonder why the previous installments of the trilogy couldn’t have been this good. (PG-13, for violence.)
“Unleashed” HHH Jet Li stars as a martial-arts whiz who’s been kept as a slave since childhood by a vicious gangster (Bob Hoskins). Morgan Freeman helps civilize the slave, but there’s still more fighting to do. A crazy action film that somehow works, thanks to Li and the script by Luc Besson. (R, for violence, language, nudity.)
“The Upside of Anger” HH Joan Allen has a juicy role in this tale of a suburban mother whose husband disappears. Kevin Costner is a little cutesy as her interested neighbor, and despite the comic moments the film is too pleased with itself. (R, for language, subject matter.)
“The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill” HHH A feel-good documentary about Mark Bittner, a formerly homeless man who tends a flock of wild parrots (probably released pets) in San Francisco. It’s a little hippy-dippy, but it creates a nice little urban haven. (G rating.)
