Movie reviews

“The 40 Year-Old Virgin” HHH It’s not great art, but this raunchy comedy rains down belly laughs. Steve Carell plays a well-meaning boob whose friends try to help him lose his virginity. (R, for language, nudity, subject matter.)

“Capote” HHHH An elegant account of Truman Capote’s experiences researching and writing the “non-fiction novel” “In Cold Blood.” The movie’s moral dilemma is a bit too neat, but Philip Seymour Hoffman captures the fey writer to a T. (R, for language, violence.)

“Chicken Little” HH Computer animation from the Disney folks, about the small fowl that thought the sky was falling. Cute hero, but the story has a randomness and an over-fondness for pop songs. (G)

“Derailed” HHH The life of a Chicago man (Clive Owen) goes off the tracks when he flirts with another woman (Jennifer Aniston) during his morning commute. A good film-noir plot, cleanly done. (R, for violence, language.)

“Good Night, and Good Luck.” HHH George Clooney directed this black-and-white look at the showdown between newsman Edward R. Murrow (David Strathairn) and Senator Joseph McCarthy in 1953-54. The story is strong even if the approach is just a bit self-satisfied. (PG, for subject.)

“The Ice Harvest” HH A dark comedy about a Wichita lawyer (John Cusack) embezzling money from his crooked boss on Christmas Eve. Some good moments and a funny-desperate mood, but it’s really low-key, and there’s not enough Billy Bob Thornton. (R, for violence, language, nudity.)

“Jarhead” HHH Based on a Gulf War memoir by Anthony Swofford, this episodic film follows Swoff (Jake Gyllenhaal) through Marine boot camp to the desert of Saudi Arabia, where he goes a little crazy waiting for the war to begin. An engrossing film that’s a little vague in its purpose. (R, for violence, language, nudity.)

“Just Friends” HH A former high-school nerd (Ryan Reynolds) returns home to impress an old flame (Amy Smart), but he’s got a pop diva (the uproarious Anna Faris) in tow. No real highs, but some laughs. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)

“Pride &Prejudice” HH Another Jane Austen adaptation, following headstrong Elizabeth Bennett (Keira Knightley, initially too giggly in the role) and her family’s fortunes. A youthful take on the material, but the story nevertheless holds up. (PG, for subject matter.)

“Rent” HHH Big-screen version of the long-running Broadway musical, about a group of friends dealing with art, drugs, and AIDS in 1989-90 Manhattan. Big and broad and just a little corny, the thing comes across entertainingly for those who like this kind of brassy material. (PG-13, for subject matter.)

“The Squid and the Whale” HHHH A family falls apart in Brooklyn in 1986, an event seen through the eyes of the two sons, age 16 and 12. The observations are dead-on and the acting is terrific in this funny indie film. Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney lead the cast. (R, for language, subject matter.)

“Yours, Mine and Ours” H Excruciating remake of a 1968 comedy about a blended family of eighteen kids (and two parents: Dennis Quaid and Rene Russo). Not a laugh in the whole movie. (PG, for subject matter.)

“Zathura” HHH A fun fantasy film that moves along lickety-split but conjures up an actual sense of wonder. While Dad’s away, two boys play an ancient board game that projects them into outer space. (PG, for violence.)
