It’s happy hour art class.
Known as “paint and sip,” studios pair merlot with van Gogh in a festive setting.
“It is mostly entertainment,” said Joan Duce, co-owner of Embellished in Edmonds. “You get some skill tips.”
Artists take home an original masterpiece.
Duce opened Embellished in July after going to a Seattle area studio on a girls’ night out.
“None of us had painted since kindergarten,” she said. “We had a great time. I said, ‘We could really use something like this in Edmonds.’ And off we went.”
Two months and a liquor license later, she and family members opened Embellished in downtown Edmonds.
“In five days, we sold 700 Groupons,” said Duce.
Students follow along as an instructor gives step-by-step direction. All paint the same thing, but with their own flair.
This isn’t paint-by-numbers, mind you. Or fine art. They might paint a flower, a chandelier, a giant eyeball or an Edmonds version of “Starry Night,” complete with ferry.
Sessions cost $40, and include painting supplies, appetizers and the first glass of wine, beer or nonalcoholic drink.
“We go through a lot of wine,” Duce said. “People are intimidated by painting. They start to relax and have a great time. If they really want to whoop it up they’ll buy a bottle.”
The trick is to not dip your paint brush into your wine glass.
