Skagit County musician Marcia Kester has come a long way, let’s say from the bottom to the top of her dream.
The bottom involved a dark world of drugs and alcohol and the temporary loss of her children. The top involves the end of the past and a new tribute show to Patsy Cline and Wynonna Judd.
The show, “Journeys of Heart and Soul: Tribute to the Queens of Country,” debuts Saturday at Historic Everett Theatre.
Kester and the Three for the Road Band will focus on music of Patsy Cline and Wynonna Judd with songs by a few other female musical legends sprinkled in.
Red Curtain Foundation for the Arts, who is producing the show, said Kester’s vocal talents are a match for Patsy Cline’s soulful, bluesy songs.
“Mix in a healthy dose of sass and triumph, thanks to Wynonna Judd, and you’ve got a full evening of entertainment and inspiration,” according to a Red Curtain press release.
Kester is hoping her show, and some of her own stories she will share with the audience, will inspire and “encourage others to follow their passions no matter their age or challenges.”
“My upcoming show is being created with the vision of wonderful music and the kind of entertainment that leaves people smiling and inspired that they came,” Kester said in an email.
Kester went through years of drug and alcohol abuse and her two children were taken away from her by CPS for a time. Kester pulled herself out of this mess by returning to school and following her passion to perform.
Kester has since received the Lewis Award at Skagit Valley College, an annual award given to the student who exemplifies high ethical and moral standards, compassion for others and a desire to learn.
Kester said the past seven years — especially the last five — have been a “breathtaking ride and sharing stories along the way has been an important part of this music journey.”
Kester is a favorite at Historic Everett Theatre’s Hometown Hootenanny concerts. She is backed by her Three for the Road band made up of professional local musicians Duane Trueblood on bass guitar and keyboards, Pat Rowe on pedal steel and lead guitar and Steve Smith on drums.
“Journeys of Heart and Soul: Tribute to the Queens of Country” begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Historic Everett Theatre, 2911 Colby Ave., Everett.
Tickets are $13 and $16.50. Go to brownpapertickets.com or call the box office at 425-258-6766. The box office opens at 6:30 p.m. the day of the show.
